Homewood Mountain Resort held its annual Pro Patrol Tuesday, March 9. This event is truly legendary – a Tahoe tradition. HMR Patrol Race serves as a beacon for California patrol teams from all Tahoe mountains; as well as the southern Sierra and northern Nevada mountains.

The Homewood Patrol Race, though, is a ski/snowboard race in a way that Bay-To-Breakers is a running race; or Mardi Gras is homage to the approach of Ash Wednesday. As there are skilled players in every football game, there are racers at this race; but as there are tailgaters at a football game, there are the rest of the folks at the Homewood Patrol Race.

Before we digress too much, a big congratulations goes to Team Kirkwood, who left with the Patrol Race trophy for 2010. Strong work.

Now back to digressing. If you missed the 2010 Homewood Patrol Race, below is a quick recall. If you see yourself in it, fantastic. If not, be sure to mark the date next year and join us for an evening of fun, racing [kind of], taco eating, and a chance to be posted on the internet while dancing by yourself in the middle of a driving snow storm.

All I can say is WHAT A DAY! Homewood today is why we all either live at Lake Tahoe or visit Lake Tahoe: amazing snow, gorgeous weather, great friends, and stunning scenery. It really doesn’t get any better.

Today was Homewood’s opening day, and the entire mountain was open thanks to the 5+ feet of snowfall (at the base!) the mountain has received so far this December. I found light, silky snow off trail on the north facing slopes in the trees, and Shaggy and his team of grooming pros deserve a HUGE nod for putting down some of the best groomed trails! Thanks guys!

If you still need a little motivating “push” to log off the computer and start logging some vertical at Homewood, here are some pictures and videos from opening day. Hope to see you here soon!

All signs pointed toward a beautiful opening day, right from watching the sunrise from the shore at Homewood:

This is “just the way it is” at Homewood:

First chair for the day – AND for winter 09/10!

You won’t find friendlier skiers and riders than you will at Homewood:

Beautiful snow, fun vibe, gorgeous day – see what I mean? Doesn’t get better than this!!

Heather Cosby was stoked on the snow and the view:

And of course, one of Homewood’s frequent visitors, Ellis, dropped in to say hello around noon:

Ellis was jealous because he can’t ski. Because he’s an eagle.

This view is amazing, whether you’ve seen it once or a million times:

Great snow, lots of fun people out there for Homewood’s opening day – what a great beginning!

We saw some great moves by the littlest shredders in Tahoe. There was big air (for them), some slick switch moves, and some crashes. Everyone with a big smile, which was everyone, was a winner and got a Mini Slopestyle sweatshirt and certificate.

This was such a fun event for everyone involved. The parents lived it, we enjoyed playing with the kids for the day and the kids had a blast! Pretty soon these kids will be ripping it of the huge kickers in the big kid comps, but we love watching them learn here at Homewood.

It was awesome to see so many youngsters out tearing it up. All our neighbors were here too with teams and competitors coming from Alpine Meadows, Squaw Valley, Mt. Rose and Heavenly. Thanks for coming out! There’s nothing better than great snow, great views and GREAT SKIERS!

Thanks to Chase Duhon of Reno for rocking the helmet cam on a killer run down the course!

Judges for the fiery chili was the legendary snowmaker Terry Weltmer, The food and Beverage super human, Chris Patrick and culinary genius, Jeff Coburn of the Ticket Department. It must have been tough to pick a winner since all of the chili was awesome!

1st place and holder of the trophy and bragging rights for the 2008|2009 season went to Victoria Gustafson of IT. And 2nd place went to John Noble also of IT (maybe they know a good recipe website). Coming in 3rd place, Ryan Smith of Food and Beverage fame. People’s Choice and honorable mention went to chili guru Ryan Seelye of Vehicle Maintenance who was trying to win back to back cook offs.
We were stoked to see so many old friends, talk about our favorite things about Homewood and share a toast to the coming ski season at Homewood. The snow on the mountain has really gotten good since then, and we couldn’t be happier to see all our friends making turns in the fresh powder over the Christmas Holiday.

All the favorites were open, and even with all this new snow, Homewood’s grooming team had perfectly groomed slopes for everyone who is still easing into the season with gentle turns.

It’s still snowing, and Christmas and the New Year look to be filled with powder days! Enjoy some photos from today at Homewood:
